Hidamari Sketch 10

Hidamari Sketch 10 includes the four Hidamari Apartment residents and Yoshinoya. The first half surrounds Yamabuki High School’s festival, and the second half surrounds the Hidamari residents going to a bathhouse.

Scene 1: 00:25 - 01:08
C: Mi
After a night of preparing for the Yamabuki festival, Miyako wakes up and takes Yuno’s drawing to the exhibition room. Yuno is asleep and doesn’t significantly react to the events taking place, so she isn’t tracked in this scene. Miyako tries to wake Yuno up by shaking her shoulders, but later decides to let her sleep, displaying both the concern for her to get her awake before the festival starts and the caring to give her extra rest and bring her drawing to the exhibition in her place. Both acts could be construed as friendly or yuri, which would give her a 2, but the gentle mood of the scene and the portrayal of her actions push her up to a 3.

Scene 2: 02:43 - 03:33
C: Yu, Mi
Yuno wakes up and asks Miyako where her drawing went. There’s some low-level friendly yuri in Yuno’s thanking of Miyako for taking in the drawing and Miyako’s compliment of the work Yuno put into it, so each character ends up with a 1.

Scene 3: 03:37 - 04:39
C: Yu
Yuno works the lighting of her class’s performance of “Cinderella.” Her pleasant mental image of Miyako and repetition of gratitude towards her raises her yurilevels, but it’s quickly forgotten and Yuno spends the rest of the scene grappling with very low self-esteem and thoughts of suicide. She gets a 1, and a referral to Inochi no Denwa.

Scene 4: 04:40 - 04:57
C: Yo
Yoshinoya informs the play cast that her request to hold a performance after the festival has been turned down by the principal. Nothing yuri about her news, so a 0 for her.

Scene 5: 04:58 - 05:23
C: Yu, Mi, Hi
Hiro meets Yuno and Miyako outside the play. Their small talk isn’t especially yuri, so everyone ends up with a 0.

Scene 6: 05:23 - 06:03
C: Yu, Mi, Sa, Hi
A gun cocks behind Small-Fry Yuno’s head. She freezes. It’s Private Eye Sae, fresh off the beat. Her chief dame Hiro, gams longer than Miyako’s face is wide, commends Sae’s acting--but nothing’s an act in the mean halls of Yamabuki. “Any plans after this?” and with that it’s clear she’s looking for more fine women. But Hiro steps in (and in her red dress, Sae knew she was a dangerous woman, but that was just how she liked it--nothing risked, nothing gained, that’s the game), and since Sae hasn’t even had the time to take off her coat I could tell a pesudo-familial dynamic was at play with her, Hiro, and the one Sae’s plants down at Hidamari South call “X.” But that miniscule moeblob isn’t having any of it, and with a fishy claim that she’s not hungry she’s off to the exhibitions. Sae rubbed her cigarette out on the floor. She had 1, Hiro had 2, Yuno and Miyako each had 0: there was no shortage of yurilevels here--and that was the way she was going to keep it. It was the classic case of “Subtext on the Street.”

Scene 7: 06:03 - 06:47
C: Yu
Yuno goes to the exhibition room. She herself doesn’t convey much yuri, overly focused on getting to the drawing. The drawing, however, may suggest latent yuri, since, of the four figures represented, the three women are more centrally-placed, given much more detail, and portrayed as warmer and happier than the lone boy in the back. Whether or not this is simply Yuno drawing what was in front of her at the time, it gives her a 1 for the scene.

Scene 8: 06:47 - 07:40
C: Yu, Yo
Yoshinoya appears and gives her interpretation of the drawing. Her compliments to Yuno on her work and the heart motif that appears afterwards give her a 1, but Yuno’s refusal to accept it leave her at a 0. (Also, Yuno: the investigation will continue despite your objections, so please don't address me.)

Scene 9: 07:40 - 08:02
C: Yu, Mi
Miyako compliments Yuno’s drawing. Essentially the same thing happens with them as happened between Yoshinoya and Yuno in the previous scene, and Miyako doesn’t convey any stronger yuri than Yoshinoya did, so similarly Miyako gets a 1 while Yuno gets another 0.

Scene 10: 08:02 - 08:14
C: Yu, Mi
Miyako takes Yuno to see the drawing of her she has in the exhibition. Miyako clearly put work into conveying Yuno’s form, and combined with holding her hand on the way to the exhibition room she easily gets a 4. Yuno partakes in the hand-holding and even smiles during it, but the rest of the scene is somewhat dry, landing her with a total of 3.

Scene 11: 08:17 - 09:33
C: Yu, Mi, Sa, Hi
The Hidamaris meet in Sae’s room. Their discussion mostly surrounds their relief at the end of the festival and the yuri in the scene is light, but Hiro gets minor yurilevels for explaining Sae’s relationship with her editor, again displaying the close bond she has with her. Hiro gets 1, the rest stay at 0.

Scene 12: 09:35 - 10:01
C: Yo
Yoshinoya begins her cosplay performance in spite of the principal’s objection. Her claim to give “any kids” an inoculation is hopefully to be expected of a competent nurse, but is conveyed as an erotic line to both the boys and girls in the audience, and for her lack of specification Yoshinoya doesn’t get yurilevels.

Scene 13: 10:01 - 11:42
C: Yu, Mi, Sa, Hi
Miyako, Sae and Hiro attempt to cheer Yuno up by revealing they were secretly watching her when she thought she was alone. It’s unspecified who suggested the idea (I speculate it was Miyako, but that can’t factor into the investigation unless it was said or suggested on-screen), but whoever did would have received major yurilevels from it. Sae puts the most work into reassuring Yuno that she did fine, and gets the most yurilevels for it, with Hiro and Miyako about tied in their efforts. Yuno’s appreciation and cheering up from their work also increases her readings. Miyako again discusses the drawing of Yuno, saying it was inspired by Yuno’s suffering, which isn’t an especially romantic sentiment. Final readings are Sae at 2, and the rest at 1.

Scene 14: 11:42 - 11:56
C: Yo
Yoshinoya continues her performance. Her dancing moves, though energetic, aren’t especially gay (as would be, say, the Dougie). She remains at 0.

Scene 15: 11:56 - 12:17
C: Yu, Sa, Hi
Yuno explains how Kishi’s advice (see Hidamari Sketch 09) helped her come up with a subject for her drawing. Her admiration falls along the lines of a sempai-kohai relationship, which can be yuri but more than often isn’t, so she only gets a 1. Sae and Hiro play very small roles and don’t get the chance to increase yurilevels, so they get 0s.
The Hidamari residents then head outside to see what is causing music, but since it is a scene in which nobody talks there would have been no yurilevels to count; hence it has been left out of the episode’s scene time.

Scene 16: 12:24 - 12:30
C: Yo
Yoshinoya prepares for her next appearance, blissfully unaware the principal is waiting to reprimand her. Nothing in her actions or dialogue suggests yuri and she gets a 0.

Scene 17: 12:30 - 13:44
C: Yu, Mi, Sa, Hi

The Hidamaris walk down the street to the bathhouse. Yuno, Sae, and Hiro all get yurilevels for expressing their desires to be close to each other, though they frame it in terms of their own needs to not be alone, which makes them all sound needy and reduces their readings slightly. Miyako also gets yurilevels for putting her hands on Yuno’s shoulders in shock, reinforcing that their relationship is a deeply physical one. Everybody gets 1 for the scene.

Scene 18: 13:44 - 14:07
C: Yu, Mi
Yuno and Miyako enter the bathhouse. Miyako still has her hands on Yuno’s shoulders, which Yuno appears happy with, but neither character does anything yuri past that, with much of the scene focused on a joke about Miyako’s crushing poverty. Miyako and Yuno with 1 each.

Scene 19: 14:08 - 14:24
C: Yu, Mi, Sa, Hi
The four undress and prepare to enter the bath. Sae and Hiro are both very embarrassed to undress in front of each other, but at the same time stare at each other’s partially-nude bodies, suggesting it is a romantic embarrassment instead of an abashed one. Meanwhile, Yuno chases after a naked Miyako. Miyako’s lack of shame shows that she is comfortable being nude around the other characters, which may not be romantic but certainly expresses that she’s very comfortable around other women. Yuno tries to hide her nudity in a towel, which could in certain interpretations convey the same type of embarrassment Sae and Hiro have. Sae and Hiro have 4, Miyako gets 2, and Yuno holds steady at 1.

Scene 20: 14:25 - 19:05
C: Yu, Mi, Sa, Hi
Yuno, Miyako, Sae, and Hiro spend time in the public bath. Though they are all nude, since they’re at a public bath it’s to be expected and will not affect their yurilevels unless the level of nudity is significant or noticeable (for instance, Hiro’s insistence on wearing a towel even when fully submerged, or Yuno’s wearing a towel around her breasts). At one point Yuno refers to Sae as an ideal older brother, reiterating the image of Sae as a masculine figure, but it’s not especially significant without contrast to a similarly feminine figure (such as Hiro) so no yurilevels are given there. Miyako gets a 1 for her general openness with her body, and Sae barely does as well since she also goes towelless, but Yuno and Hiro get 0.

Scene 21: 19:06 - 19:23
C: Mi

Miyako recounts her exploits as a horse. She doesn’t do anything with noticeable yuri, so she gets a 0.

Scene 22: 19:24 - 19:33
C: Yu, Mi, Sa, Hi
The others applaud Miyako’s performance and Yuno is asked about her role in lighting. Their clapping is not especially yuri, and it’s not substantial enough to count as complimenting except for Sae’s response. She gets 1, everyone else gets 0.

Scene 23: 19:33 - 19:48
C: Yu
Yuno closes the stage curtain in spectacular fashion. Her leap to action and swing down the rope is magnificent, but it isn’t yuri. 0.

Scene 24: 19:48 - 21:02
C: Yu, Mi, Sa, Hi
Yuno and Miyako splash each other and the Hidamaris talk about a man who was eating near Sae and Hiro during the play. Yuno and Miyako’s game gives them each yurilevels for being a close type of splash. The conversation that follows doesn’t especially strike as yuri, instead being a discussion about food. Yuno and Miyako end with 1, Sae and Hiro with 0.

Scene 25: 21:04 - 21:34
C: Yu, Mi, Sa, Hi

The Hidamaris leave the bath and start to dress. There’s little significant yuri for the first part of the scene, but toward the end all four spread their legs in front of a mirror. Since most of them are still naked, it is likely that everything is on display for all to see, and this will get them major yurilevels. Miyako, who isn’t in a towel, gets the most at 4, Hiro and Yuno each get 3, and Sae, who actually is clothed, only gets 1.

Scene 26: 21:39 - 22:07
C: Yu
Yuno returns home and finds she had previously prepared a bath. No yuri to comment on, so she gets a 0.

Final Yurilevel Readings: (both Aokis and Umes are out of 4)
Episode: 0.7669A
Characters:

  1. Sae: 1.082U
  2. Miyako: 1.080U
  3. Hiro: 0.722U
  4. Yuno: 0.560U
  5. Yoshinoya: 0.301U

A slightly longer total scene time and generally low yurilevels, particularly in the second half, was balanced by some middling readings in long scenes to result in an episode reading that was about average. In the character rankings, Miyako got high yurilevels throughout, but Sae just barely beat her out for the top spot with a 2 in Scene 13 that received a noticeable weighting for the scene’s length. Yoshinoya got her second yurilevel in the investigation, but she still stays firmly at the bottom.

Further analysis will continue with Hidamari Sketch 11.

Corrections:
8/24/13: Yamabuki High School was initially mislabed as "Yamabuki Academy." The name has been corrected.
