Hidamari Sketch xHoshimittsu 08 includes the six Hidamari residents, Yoshinoya, Kuwahara, Mami, Nakayama, and a Yamabuki cafeteria lady. Part A follows Yuno and Miyako attempting to purchase crab-fried rice at the school Chinese fair, and Part B centers on Yuno’s difficulties in the school concours.
Scene 01: 00:09 - 00:43
C: No
Nori eats lunch. She is sitting with other girls, but does not interact with them enough for her relationships with them to seem yuri in any significant way, keeping her at 0.
Scene 02: 00:43 - 01:14
C: Yo, Ku
The principal speaks to the other teachers. Similarly to the previous scene, neither Yoshinoya nor Kuwahara shows any yuri in their actions (Kuwahara doesn’t even speak), and both get 0s.
Scene 03: 02:46 - 03:18
C: Yu, Mi, Sa, No, Na
Yuno, Miyako, Sae, Nori, and Nazuna do radio exercises. On the whole, there isn’t much yuri in this scene; at one point, Nori replies to a question by Nazuna expressly not meant for her (as denoted by Nazuna’s use of a collective “sempai” [先輩], referring to Yuno, Miyako, and Sae), and the implications of both wanting to help answer Nazuna’s question and preventing the others from contributing cancel out so that everyone ends with 0.
Scene 04: 03:20 - 03:52
C: Yu, Mi, Sa, Hi, No, Na
Hiro joins the others on the backyard lawn. Still mostly asleep, she accuses the others of eating without her, implying an inherent distrust or feeling of being left out. Sae manages to control her by putting an arm around her waist (though when the scene shows them both, she’s only holding Hiro’s arm), assuaging her fears, and leading her back to the room. Her ease in handling the situation and quickness to close physical contact shows an ease with Hiro that raises Sae to 3; Hiro’s willingness to blindly obey Sae reverses her initial loss enough to bring her to 1. Nazuna also gets a 1 at the end for wondering if Hiro will be okay, displaying concern for her, and the others stay at 0.
Scene 05: 03:58 - 05:30
C: Yu, Mi, Sa, Hi, No, Na
The Hidamaris have breakfast in Hiro’s room. Nazuna is particularly responsive to Nori’s description of the menu at the school’s Chinese fair, saying she can tell how good it is by hearing Nori talk about it, a praise of her that raises her to 1. Miyako asks Sae if she has had the Chinese fair food, but Hiro answers, saying that they both did; answering for Sae groups them both into one unit, an action with precedent in the series, and together with how she is talking about an action they both participated in together, they are both raised to 2. Nazuna additionally gets 2, and the others get 0s.
Scene 06: 05:32 - 06:01
C: Yu, Mi
Yuno and Miyako walk to school. The bulk of the scene is them discussing various types of crabs, so neither gets especially strong readings, though Yuno is bumped up to 1 since being with Miyako appears to make her especially cheery here.
Scene 07: 06:04 - 08:04
C: Yu, Mi, Yo
Yuno and Miyako draw sea lifes. Miyako is especially interested in and supportive of Yuno’s art, asking what she’ll draw and giving complimentary facts about starfish, and Yuno is in turn emotionally affected by her starfish facts; both get minor readings for this friendly interest in each other. At the end, Yuno, who was not able to finish, tells Miyako to go to the cafeteria for crab-fried rice without her, but Miyako grabs her shoulder and insists that she’ll never leave Yuno behind, suggesting they go get rice after school, a display of loyalty and of prioritizing Yuno over food that raises Miyako to 3 while Yuno gets a side reading of 2 for her acceptance of these actions. Yoshinoya gets a 0 for her lewdness at the beginning of the scene since the class is mixed-gender.
Scene 08: 08:05 - 08:37
C: Yu, Mi, Mami
Yuno finishes her drawing. Miyako brings her a margarine roll to compensate for not having lunch, getting moderate readings for her concern. Mami also brings her food for unknown reasons; she has not been shown to be aware that Yuno had to skip lunch or that she otherwise needed food, so it’s unusual that she brought her what appears to be a roll in tinfoil (taking the appearance of a small rock). Her lack of responsibility or involvement in the situation raises Mami to 3 since she still brought Yuno food while Miyako only gets 2; Yuno, who thanks both somewhat half-heartedly, gets 1.
Scene 09: 08:38 - 08:45
C: Yu, Mi
Yuno and Miyako run to the cafeteria. Both are smiling broadly and running daintily, though their happiness is likely more from anticipation for the rice than a result of being near each other. They each get 1 since it is still likely some factor.
Scene 10: 08:46 - 09:05
C: Yu, Mi, Cafeteria lady
Yuno and Miyako fail to obtain crab-fried rice. They lie prostrate on the floor in despair, reaching out to each other, a mutual association between each other and comfort from pain that raises them each to 2. The cafeteria lady gets a 0 for mostly acting as a source of exposition.
Scene 11: 09:05 - 09:51
C: Yu, Mi, Sa, Hi
Yuno and Miyako join Sae and Hiro on their way home. Yuno blames herself for both her and Miyako missing out on the crab-fried rice, but Miyako assures her it’s not a problem; Yuno’s sense of responsibility and Miyako’s continued preference for Yuno’s happiness rather than food gives them each comparable increases. When they explain the situation to Sae and Hiro, Hiro suggests making the rice for them at Hidamari Apartments, though Yuno and Miyako are quick to insist she doesn’t have to. Though this is caused by their previous conversation on the difficulty of making crab-fried rice, Hiro evidently interprets this as them being worried about her weight, and Sae hastily tells her they aren’t. Yuno and Miyako each get 2 for their shows of empathy, Sae and Hiro get 1.
Scene 12: 09:54 - 11:47
C: Yu, Mi, Sa, Hi, No, Na
The Hidamaris eat imitation crab-fried rice. Yuno, Miyako, Nori, and Nazuna all vocally express satisfaction with the meal in some way. Nori additionally says it’s similar to the school rice she enthused about earlier in the episode, becoming ashamed by her use of an incorrect metaphor in doing so. Miyako repeatedly compliments Hiro’s cooking, which Hiro is more than happy to receive and responds to by giving Miyako a larger and larger helping; Miyako’s praises might be partly an attempt to evoke this and thus get more food, weakening the increase she receives here. Sae tries to incorporate Nazuna into the discussion by asking if she had the rice at school, an effort at inclusion that gives her a minor increase. Upon hearing that she did, Hiro becomes upset that she made Nazuna have crab-fried rice twice in one day, but Nazuna assures her that she wanted to have Hiro’s rice as well and that it made her happy to eat with everyone, assurances that significantly raise her readings. Hiro gleefully says she’ll make anything Nazuna wants, raising her to 3 overall, while Nazuna and Nori also get 3, and Yuno, Miyako, and Sae get 1.
Scene 13: 11:47 - 12:27
C: Yu
Yuno prepares for the next day. Her cork board has various images of the other Hidamaris both individually and in groups, giving her a 1 for her desire to keep memories of them.
Scene 14: 12:47 - 14:33
C: Yo
Yoshinoya prepares motifs for the school concours. Her interactions with the male teacher Mashiko preclude yuri situations, holding her at 0.
Scene 15: 14:38 - 16:43
C: Yu, Mi, Yo
The school concours is held. While drawing, Miyako notes that Yuno looks confused at one point and at another encourages her to keep going after Yuno is worried she hit her with a broken pencil lead; Miyako gets a moderate increase for her support of Yuno while Yuno gets a minor increase for her concern. Later, Yoshinoya walks behind Yuno and makes her anxious by silently staring at her. Though Yuno believes she is judging her art, Yoshinonya is musing on how Yuno has a good butt (こ尻でいいな, “koshiri de ii na,” translated by the subtitles as “tight little butt”). Yoshinoya gets a 4 for her fixation on one of Yuno’s erogenous areas, Miyako gets 1, and Yuno gets 0.
Scene 16: 16:45 - 16:56
C: Yu, Mi
Yuno and Miyako head to lunch. Miyako acts strongly homosexual in this scene, holding Yuno’s shoulders with both hands and calling her plan for lunch “gorgeous,” and ends with 3. Yuno gets 2 for acceding to the shoulder contact.
Scene 17: 16:57 - 17:19
C: Yu, Cafeteria lady
Yuno attempts to order lunch. Neither suggests significant yuri, so both end with 0.
Scene 18: 17:21 - 18:24
C: Yu, Mi, Yo
The school concours pieces are evaluated. Miyako asks Yuno if something is wrong when there is something very visibly wrong, so her increase is slight but not very significant. After Miyako scores highly, Yuno quickly tells her she’s great, raising her to 1, while Miyako also gets 1. Yoshinoya does little interaction with women and thus stays at 0.
Scene 19: 18:24 - 18:32
C: Yu, Mi, Mami, Nakayama
Mami and Nakayama observe Yuno. Mami asks if Yuno is getting shorter, and Nakayama concurs that she looks smaller than usual, but neither one makes anything of this, getting 1s since they were still observing Yuno. Miyako gets a 2 for her visible concern at seeing Yuno upset, partly since it’s less clear than the previous scene and partly since it trumps the excitement Miyako had in the last scene from scoring well in the concours. Yuno, who has no face in this scene and does nothing but shrink into nothingness, stays at 0.
Scene 20: 18:34 - 18:41
C: Yu, Mi
Yuno and Miyako silently walk home. Yuno’s depression carries over the previous scene and is to be expected, but the commonly-cheery Miyako is notably expressionless. Since this is very like empathy for Yuno, it raises her to 2; Yuno, who is not in a state to respond, stays at 0.
Scene 21: 18:45 - 19:17
C: Yu, Mi, Sa
Yuno and Miyako listen to Sae yell on the phone. Sae is on the phone with her editor, shown in previous episodes to be a woman, so her fury toward a woman keeps her at 0. Yuno interprets one of Sae’s shouts as being directed at her and cowers accordingly, a fear of Sae that also gives her a 0. Miyako notes that Sae doesn’t yell very often, a familiarity with her moods that only raises her to 1 since it does not require a significant closeness to be aware of.
Scene 22: 19:17 - 19:55
C: Yu
Yuno feels sorry for herself. Her self-centered focus prevents her from doing anything yuri, and she gets another 0.
Scene 23: 20:00 - 21:08
C: Yu, Sa, Hi
Hiro consoles Yuno. She says that Yuno will get better with practice and does not need to worry about the concours, getting her a slight increase for her attempts to make Yuno feel better and getting Yuno a slight increase for her receptiveness to these comments. Sae’s screams in the next room prompt Yuno to worry, but Hiro stays calm, explaining that Sae is being constantly judged despite still being a young, improving artist, using the situation to make a point to Yuno about perseverance. Hiro’s profound understanding of Sae’s situation and empathy for Yuno raise her to 3, while Yuno gets 1 for receiving these. Sae, who is less a character and more an incoherent ball of rage, gets 0.
Scene 24: 21:11 - 21:31
C: Yu, Mi
Yuno stays up late to draw. Nothing in her actions suggests yuri, so she gets a 0. Miyako is shown to be lying awake in her room, but it’s unclear why and it’s not obviously connected to Yuno, so she also gets a 0.
Scene 25: 21:34 - 21:45
C: Mi
Miyako comes to wake Yuno up. Entering her room without Yuno’s knowledge already shows a shared trust that enables Miyako to do such things without concern of retribution. Her gentleness in stepping over to her bed and kneeling at her side show a great attention to not waking her up and thus to keeping Yuno comfortable. She also smiles warmly after wondering if Yuno stayed up late, a final show of fondness for her that leaves her with a 4 overall.
Scene 26: 21:50 - 22:08
C: Yu, Mi, Yo
Yuno struggles to stay awake in class. Miyako assures that she doesn’t have to force herself to stay awake, revealing that, presumably in the time after the previous scene, she drew fake eyes on Yuno’s eyelids to give the appearance of being attentive. The effort she took to do this, combined with the gentleness it must have done with for Yuno not to be immediately aware of such an endeavor, raises her to 3, while Yuno and Yoshinoya stay at 0.
Final Yurilevel Readings: (both Aokis and Umes are out of 4)
Episode: 0.9943A
Characters:
- Mami: 2.600U
- Hiro: 1.971U
- Nazuna: 1.643U
- Miyako: 1.291U
- Sae: 1.236U
- Yoshinoya: 1.082U
- Nakayama: 1.000U
- Yuno: 0.778U
- Nori: 0.745U
- Kuwahara: 0.000U
Cafeteria lady: 0.000U
This episode very prominently featured Yuno and Miyako, two rather low-yuri characters, depressing the whole episode to yurilevels that were low by this season’s standards. Hiro’s role as a caregiver gave her strong results, while Sae started strongly but was hurt by transcending matter to become pure fury in Part B. Nazuna continues to score more highly than Nori, while Miyako did well for the extra emphasis the episode gave her friendly actions toward Yuno. Overall these numbers are expected for an episode focusing more on friendly activities rather than more romantically-charged situations such as group events or outings.
Further analysis will continue with Hidamari Sketch xHoshimittsu 09.
